Greece, our tour in short, in the following blogs we will discuss this overwhelming country thematically. The encounters, the landscape and roads and of course the history.
We are traveling through Greece for a month in December and January. We choose to discover the mainland and the Peloponnese, the country surprises us on several aspects. The people we meet are friendly and communicative, many people speak good English. Nature is recovering after last summer’s drought and is showing itself in all its winter splendour. The roads are fine, but we also like to visit a piece of track every now and then. And of course the history, many thousands of years before our era there were already settlements here, the many archaeological excavations are the silent witnesses of this.

How we determined our route
We signed up with Workaway, a platform for travelers who want to work on the road in exchange for food and shelter. A great opportunity for us to come into contact with people who live here more intensively. We have found a Workaway host in Marmari, on the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese, on the Mani peninsula.
We have put flags on our OsmAnd map at places we want to visit. Later, after our meeting with Angelo and René, we supplement our own points with many interesting sites and places.
Angelo is an archaeologist whom we met in Olympia and spoke extensively about his work and passion, archaeology. René contacted us via Facebook with all kinds of tips for our travel route, he is an enthusiastic Greece connoisseur and 4×4 guide / owner of Hellas Travel Designers and lives in the Peloponnese. If you’re ever considering a 4×4 Greece trip, you’ve come to the right place with René.

The highlights
Greece is more than the Ionian and Aegean Sea, the culture we experience is overwhelming and we become silent knowing that people have been staying here for millennia.

The meetings with Angelo, René, Karol and Wilma and Marcel mark our journey. Of the archaeological and historical sites, we will certainly remember Olympia, Epidavros, and the Meteora Monasteries.

But Monemvasia, the Mont Saint Michel of Greece, is also picturesque, we take a long walk and enjoy a delicious meal on a terrace with a view over the water.

The Mani peninsula, with its special architectural style, the caves of Diros and our stay with Karol in Marmari, will stay with us.

The weather also cooperates, the daytime temperature rarely drops below 20°C and the sea invites us to swim.
