At the beginning of August 2020 we came back to the Netherlands after our trip through Morocco. Now, 10 months later, we left again, with Luxembourg as our first stopover.
Luxembourg as a travel destination
On our way to other travel destinations, we have already stopped in Luxembourg countless times, to refuel…
It had never occurred to us before that this country can also be a travel destination, until Corona limited travel. Luxembourg will welcome travelers again from the beginning of June 2021, without a PCR test, but with vaccination certificate.
We have both been vaccinated and have had our vaccination stamps placed in our Yellow Book, the international vaccination passport.

Dudelange
Luxembourg immediately surprises us with beautiful weather, but well, the sun is also shining in the Netherlands. We find a place to spend the night on the edge of a beautiful forest.

In the evening we read a bit about Luxembourg and pinpoint some highlights that we would like to visit. The next day we go to Dudelange, there is a free camper place with water and electricity (we don’t need that, but it is easy for other campers).
Dudelange is an old mining town and there are still steel factories. The population is very diverse with many Italians from the middle of the last century.

We walk into the city and discuss a restaurant for the evening, after all it is my (Gert Jan) birthday.

When making a reservation at restaurant Loxalis, Sonja mentioned that it was my 65th birthday. That is why we are surprised on arrival with a glass of champagne on the house.

We opt for the set menu and drink a nice bottle of Luxembourgish Auxerrois Remich Goldberg with it.

At the end of the dinner I have a glass of Japanese Nikka Whisky and Sonja an Irish coffee. We are enjoying it a lot.
Luxembourg
The next day we take the train to Luxembourg city, by the way, all public transport is free throughout the country, so that is an easy choice.
Izi Travel‘s city walk guides us through the old town, a beautiful, well-documented walk.
We think this is a beautiful city, with a nice balance between old and new.
Larochette and Müllerthal
On June 11 we leave Dudelange again and drive a beautiful route through the southeast of Luxembourg. A beautiful rolling landscape.
As a first stop we visit the castle ruins of Larochette, what a beautiful view over the city and what a well-maintained monument, really worth it.
In the Müllerthal we walk to the waterfalls.
The Schiessentümpel is a waterfall on the Black Ernz near the town of Müllerthal in the east of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is the highest waterfall in Luxembourg. The Black Ernz has sanded three trenches into a sandstone threshold here.
Then we decide to look for a campsite in Berdorf, we have gained enough impressions for one day.
Berdorf
On June 12, we first drive to the Hohllay caves, where many millstones have been “harvested” over the centuries.
On the other side of Berdorf the gorges of Martbusch are being climbed, we are in awe watching the climbers conquer the rocks.
We stop in Echternach for lunch, it is busy with tourists and day trippers because of the fair.

Vianden
In the course of the afternoon we look for a place to camp again and find this exceptionally beautiful place near Vianden.

I’m going to make another video about this, so stay tuned.
