Pieterpad day 2, stage 2: Winsum-Groningen

Yesterday it was chilly, today it was downright wintry. We left just before 10 am after a heavy snow shower in Winsum. We had a great stay with Bouwina en Henk Honingh. The snow is still visible in the park where we walk past.

We walk past the special church of Winsum with the stairs to the tower on the outside.

In the center of Winsum we start the Pieterpad again, along the harbor.

The wind is blowing hard and the snow showers alternate with hail and rain.

Fortunately the sun comes through every now and then, so we warm up again.

For lunch we take shelter in the church on the mound of Oostum.

A heavy snow shower passes, we are happy to be able to sit inside for a while.

When we step outside it starts to snow again, but luckily Groningen is within sight (on the horizon behind the grazing cows).

The trip along the Rietdiep and the Van Starckenborg Canal seems to take an infinitely long time, so we have already completed more than 17 km. Actually it is quite a boring piece and we are therefore happy when we reach Groningen. A heron is waiting for us near the Zernike academy of the university.

Or is he fishing after all?

We get tired and don’t have much of an eye for the environment. Yet this signpost strikes us, when will we travel the world again?

At 4 o’clock we are welcome at our guest address, found through Vrienden op de Fiets, we are warmly welcomed by Henk and Jenneke Zantingh.

Beautiful ships and in the background the Akerk (not the Martini Tower as I wrote earlier)
