En route to Scandinavia

We are en route to Scandinavia. After visiting friends and acquaintances in Friesland, we arrived in Denmark through Groningen and northern Germany. Denmark already really feels like Scandinavia and officially it is.

Friesland (and Groningen)

We first travel to Friesland because we were invited by Marieke and Leo to share Land Rover and travel experiences. They follow us on social media and have contacted us. We have a very pleasant evening and eat together with their two sons, Lasse (8) and Finne (6). When we go to bed in our own Milady we are far from finished and we agree to have breakfast together in the morning before we continue.

Leo drives out one of his 6 old Land Rovers to take this group portrait.

He gives us a tour of his loft (the shed where his workshop is) and shows us his Land Rovers. The top one is a Series 2 from 1958, there is still one. In the same room is another 109 and a lot of parts, including a complete 109 chassis and some engines. In the large room next door there is a tool mecca, a full-size garage bridge, a fantastic mig welding machine and the most diverse other tools are available. The pride of both Leo and Marieke is the 109 ambulance that Leo restores and is prepared by them both for travel. In the same room is another Defender.

Outside, under a shelter, a Defender 130 is waiting, which will also be used as a travel vehicle. They are therefore both very curious about the details of our new Milady Landy, they are very inspired by, among other things, the lifting roof and our Wallas stove.

Then we continue on our journey, we have lunch in Leeuwarden and are touched by this poem:

Home

Find a seat and take your hurry of
hang her slowly over the railing
next to your deadlines and hassle

empty your head and lay the world
at your feet, let it lie
you’ll get to that later

lose yourself for a while

have a coffee
and the time

After lunch we drive through the wide Frisian landscape to Sneek.

There we pay a quick visit to Naomi and Henk-Paul and their daughters Renske and Jeldau. Nice to chat with them and have a meal together.

We drive further east where we spend the night just over the border of Groningen.

We wake up in a small misty world, but so beautiful to enjoy for a while.

A short video with images of this beautiful morning.

We drive, as usual inland, to Germany, a beautiful drive that also takes us past places that we discovered on foot when we walked the Pieterpad in April.

Germany

Also in Germany we take the back roads and we choose to avoid the big cities. That is why we spend the night at a motorhome in Wischhafen on the Elbe. The next morning we take the ferry to Glückstadt, a special crossing.

Denmark

From Glückstadt we will enter Denmark, the southernmost Scandinavian country, on October 8, 2021.

In our next blog(s) we will give our impression of Denmark.
