Italy (4) | The nature parks in the Apennines

At the end of October 2022 we will travel back to the north through the interior of Italy. Especially the Apennines, south of San Marino, make a big impression on us. Beautiful landscapes, high mountains and especially the change of seasons from summer to autumn is fantastic.

San Marino is a beautiful independent state surrounded by Italy. It has its own national government, the foundation of which was laid in the year 301 AD.

The (Po) plain between San Marino and Verona is boring. We’ll probably soon forget that.

National Park Abruzzo

When we have left the Adriatic coast we immediately ascend about 1000 meters to the National Park Abruzzo . The region gives us a nice taste of all the beauty that awaits us on this part of our journey.

It is becoming more and more autumn, the trees are turning from green to yellow, red and brown.

Grand Sasso National Park

We spend the night in the Grand Sasso National Park near the Gran’Sasso d’Italia. A beautiful wild camping spot that we found at Park4Night.

Unfortunately we cannot reach the Gran’Sasso d’Italia and the observatory on the mountain from the south side, filming is taking place. The road is closed and we are kindly requested by the Carabinieri to drive the other way.

The rest of the day we spend to reach the north side of the mountain via small roads. In the course of the afternoon we succeed in this.

In this video we give an idea of the roads and the colors around the Gran’Sasso d’Italia.

Perugia

We don’t realize that this mountainous area of Perugia can be unpredictable as well as beautiful. Our visit to Norcia teaches us otherwise. The city was hit by a powerful earthquake 6 years ago. The consequences of this are still evident.

San Marino

The state of San Marino has existed politically since 301 AD. The political system is one of the oldest in Europe.

The city is beautifully maintained and is impressively situated on a mountain top with its 3 towers.

The bronze statues in the city attract our special attention.

The Po Delta

The flat land of the Po Delta is highly industrialized. Commercial buildings everywhere along the boring straight roads. We drive in one go to Verona, the city where we had our first holiday together 40 years ago.
