Italy (5) | from Verona to the Dolomites

From October 29 to November 1, 2022 we travel through Northern Italy, from Verona to the Austrian border through the Dolomites.

In Verona, the city of love, we experienced our first holiday together about 40 years ago. So this is a special place for us.

The Dolomites, the mountain range that merges into the Alps in northern Italy, is exceptional. Steep arid peaks and in this season, beautiful autumn colours.

Our route through Northern Italy

Verona

On October 29, 2022, after about 40 years, we return to Verona. We then parked our Renault 4 near the Verona arena and went to discover the city.

When we returned to the spot where we parked our car, with several other cars on a curb, all the cars were gone! With hands and feet, there was hardly any English spoken at that time, we explained that our car was gone. After a fair amount of umming and ahhing, a hefty fine and a taxi ride to a suburb of the city, we got our car back.

The city of Verona

This experience haunted us all these years and prevented us from visiting this lovely city. Now we park our Milady Landy at Verona’s city campsite, Camping Verona Village , and take the bus into town. In 20 minutes we are in the center of the city, at the Museo di Castelvecchio .

From the Ponte di Castelvecchio, which leads over the river Adige next to the castle, we get a nice impression of the city.

The city is sunny and we walk at ease on the colorful squares and through the narrow streets.

Of course we visit Juliet’s house, with the balcony under which Romeo, according to Shakespeare’s story, declared love to her.

The mountains of Northern Italy

Autumnal mountains

One day in Verona is enough for us. Especially because the campsite is sandwiched between highways and we therefore had to sleep with traffic noise in the background.

So we continue to the north, into the mountains. East of Trente we find a nice place to stay at the ski station of Panarotta.

On the horizon we can already see the sharp peaks of the Dolomites, a beautiful prospect for the coming days.

The Dolomites

After a quiet and fresh night, we sleep at an altitude of almost 1,800m, we continue to the Dolomites. The slopes get steeper and the mountains get sharper, what a beautiful ride.

After the high Passa Sella or Sellajoch in German (2,240m) we find a place to stay at the foot of the Pisciadu, where a via ferrata also starts for enthusiasts.

The fact that we are in a German-speaking area, Alto Adige or Sud Tirol, becomes apparent when we continue driving. The village of Toblach, where we find a campsite, is completely German-speaking and also an important memorial site of the composer Gustav Mahler.

We conclude our journey through the Dolomites with a hike to the Tre Cime or Drei Zinnen. An impressive rock massif, just south of Toblach.
